Dr. Solomon Tadesse Zeleke Secures Nearly $1 Million Across Three Federal and State Grants to Advance Next-Generation Cancer Therapeutics

Leading the funding effort is a new R16 SuRE-First Grant Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The R16 is a highly competitive program supporting early-stage investigators in launching independent research projects, providing multi-year funding to build sustainable research programs, advance scientific discovery, and offer high-impact, hands-on research opportunities for students.

Dr. Zeleke’s laboratory focuses on medicinal chemistry and drug discovery targeting cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) to develop innovative treatments for complex cancers. His newly awarded active projects include:

• NIH R16 SuRE-First Grant (07/01/2026 – 04/30/2030):
  Project Title: “Mechanism-Driven Development of CDK2/4/6 Inhibitors to Combat Resistance and Broaden the Clinical Reach of CDK Inhibitors”
• Department of Defense War (DOW) Grant (08/01/2026 – 07/31/2028):
  Project Title: “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Conventional Drug Discovery to Develop Dual Mechanism Molecules Targeting DNA Repair and Transcription in Osteosarcoma”
• State Board of Education Grant (07/01/2026 – 06/20/2027):
  Project Title: “Artificial Intelligence Guided Discovery of Dual Mechanism Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 12 (CDK12)/Cyclin K Modulators for Targeted Osteosarcoma Therapy”
