ڰ Director of Campus Public Safety Stephen Chatterton retires after 23 years of service

ڰ campus public safety Director Stephen Chatterton has retired after 23 years of service to ڰ.

‘We want to commend Director Chatterton for his dedicated and exemplary service to ڰ, helping this University be one of the safest in the nation during his tenure,” said James Fletcher, ڰ Vice President for Finance and Administration. “He was a consummate professional.”

Stephen ChattertonUnder Chatterton’s leadership, ڰ Campus Public Safety received accreditation by the Idaho Chiefs of Police Association this fall. Chatterton was also honored with the ڰ Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2012.

As the ڰ Director of Public Safety, Chatterton was instrumental in making ڰ one of the safest college campuses in the nation, as recognized by several national publications. Following a distinguished career in law enforcement that began with the Bannock County Sheriff Department, the U.S. Army, the State of Idaho Department of Law Enforcement and the Idaho National Laboratory, Chatterton brought his skills to ڰ. Chatterton has more than 37 years of state service between ڰ and the Idaho State Police.

He obtained a Certificate of Completion, Police Technology from ڰ in 1968 and his bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from ڰ in 1980. At ڰ, Chatterton was a principal investigator for many grants, including a $1 million grant from the Homeland Defense and Justice Department fund that improved and upgraded ڰ security programs.

Cal Edwards has been named as ڰ interim director of public safety. Edwards is the coordinator and master instructor of the ڰ College of Technology Law Enforcement Program and chief of police for the city of Inkom.

A national search for a new director of public safety will be undertaken in the next few weeks.
