‘Do Wealthy Nations have an Obligation to Admit Immigrants?’ is topic of Nov. 19 debate

POCATELLO – The ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø Rupp Debate Society, together with the ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø philosophy program, will explore the question: “Do Wealthy Nations have an Obligation to Admit Immigrants?” during a panel discussion at 6 p.m. Nov. 19.
The presentation will be in the Pond Student Union Wood River Room. The public is welcome and invited to attend.
Two members of the philosophy faculty and two members of the ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø Rupp Debate team will join in the discussion. The event will be moderated my Evan Rodriguez, philosophy assistant professor. Audience members will vote on their opinion of the question both before and after the discussion. After brief opening statements, the panelists will answer questions from the audience.
Associate Professor James Skidmore and Assistant Professor Michael Roche will represent the ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø Department of Philosophy. Debaters Rianne Quigley, a senior English major, and Nicholas Grunig, a senior philosophy major, will represent the debate squad. Each of the four will discuss and support one of four initial positions to frame the discussion, after which they will take questions from the moderator and the audience.
The Department of Philosophy and the ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø Rupp Debate Squad are both part of the College of Arts and Letters.
Refreshments will be served and there is no charge for the 90-minute event.
