Hinge Board
Brief Description
This demonstration is a smaller version of the Torque Board. The setup begins with two boards connected by a hinge, one of which has a wire attached to it. The board without the wire is then secured to a table so that the other board is free to hang from the hinge, wire side down. It may seem counterintuitive, but when the handle of a hammer is placed through the wire so that it hangs below the setup, the torque it applies to the board will be sufficient to hold it up so it is parallel to the secured board.
Materials
Hinge Board, C-Clamp, and a hammer.

Performing the Demo
Start by taking the hinge board and securing the piece with no wire to a table. Make sure that the wire is towards the ground and that there is plenty of room between the table and the board for the hammer to fit.

Performing the Demo
Slip the handle of the hammer through the wire loop and rest the end of it on the board. Allow the head of the hammer to fall and the board will remain lifted.

Other Notes
The larger version of this demo is called “Torque Board” (see PIRA 1J40.15).
