Torque Board

PIRA 1J40.15

Brief Description

This demonstration is a great example when talking about statics. The setup begins with two boards connected by a hinge, one of which has a loop of string attached to it. The board without the string is then secured to a ladder so that the other board is free to hang from the hinge, string side down. It may seem counterintuitive, but when the handle of a sledge hammer is placed through the string so that it hangs below the setup, the torque it applies to the board will be sufficient to hold it up so it is parallel to the secured board.

Materials

Hinged “Torque Board” (outreach), medium ladder, 2 C-Clamps, and a sledgehammer.

A sledge hammer, a wooden board, and a large C-clamp

A ladder

Performing the Demo

Start by taking the torque board and securing the longer piece to the ladder. Make sure that the string is towards the ground and that there is plenty of room between the ladder and the board for the sledgehammer to fit.

Performing the Demo

Slip the handle of the hammer through the string loop and rest the end of it on the grip attached to the board. Allow the head of the hammer to fall and the board will remain lifted.

Other Notes

There is also a smaller version of this demo (see “Hinge Board PIRA 1J40.16”).
